Don't wait to order your seeds
My sister stopped at Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds ( a great place to buy seeds) today to pick up some seeds. They were out of some of what she wanted. They told her they are sending out 200-300 orders per day since Christmas. Normally they don't get that busy until March.
I would definitely get your seed ordering done early this year. There could be record demand the way the economy is going. |
Re: Don't wait to order your seeds
I second that, read an article today that said seed sales have been more than robust and that seed sellers are running out already. I have received my first order of seeds, have a second on the way; and am going to order a third round tomorrow morning. Don't delay folks you will regret it, remember; just last year there were serious seed shortages happening early as well; get em while you still can.

Re: Don't wait to order your seeds
I panicked last August and ordered mine back then. Then ordered more for Christmas presents and got another big batch for me.... Dont forget about www.seedsavers.com and www.southernexposure.com. Make sure you know how to save your seeds for the next year!

They also have gardening forums and a great magazine on heirloom seeds. They are very passionate about the fight against GMO's. |

Re: Don't wait to order your seeds
Can you get seeds that can be stored safely for a long period of time? Say 3 to 5 years?

Took your advice and made my order with Gurney's. Taking a shot at rather large (for me) scale container gardening this next year.

How can your customer know you handled them properly or they are the variety you claim they are? Seeds are a bad barter candidate unless you grow them. |
Re: Don't wait to order your seeds
Excellent service, excellent selection, excellent quality (i.e., organic, etc.):

Their products may be perfectly fine, but, they may also be low-quality stock sold to those who are on the verge of panic, and don't think rationally. Some of us are still cynical from the Y2K scams... |

Use every square inch of your small patio at your apartment, and grow extensively inside, as well. You can grow traditionally, but using hydroponic grow lights. Grow UP rather than out...meaning...make your garden grow toward the sky instead of spread out in traditional rows and plots. This is an example of how: http://www.stackandgrow.com/ (both rolling & hanging versions - you can also make your own for cheaper) Check out books from your local library on container gardening. If you have the will, finding the way is not just a cliche. GROWING A GARDEN MAY BE AS IMPORTANT AS OWNING FIREARMS. ~ |

Re: Don't wait to order your seeds
I ordered the big batch of seeds and put them away in the fall. I followed up with some 'fun' seeds a month ago. Today, I planted my first Jalapeno pepper seeds. I hope to have most of the peppers growing by the end of the month so that I can dive right into the tomatoes the first week of February. I'm starting the container tomatoes first, then planting the later varieties to give them a leg up, and then the early varieties. For peppers, I'm starting with the Jalapenos and other popular varieties, but want to dive into the heirloom Italian peppers soon. Big greenhouse operations have automatic seeders and dozens of illegal aliens laborers, I have myself and my semi-disabled mother. But we still were able to sell thousands of dollars worth of plants last year, with plans to increase production this year.
I'm in zone 7 in the Willamette Valley Oregon, so most people in my area think that I am crazy to start them this early. But then they can't believe how beautiful those gallon size tomato and pepper plants they buy from me in April and May are. But to get pepper plants that are a decent size, without using lots of expensive heat, they have to be started now. I have the pots, seeds, plant light, greenhouse, and cheap supply of dirt, so I can do this all on the relatively cheap side. (1/2 my pots I get for free or for pennies, and a large supply of river sand to mix into my potting soil. The river literally gives it to me for free each year.) All the plants start out in the house, and then move into the greenhouse that is attached to my house. By March, I start moving them to the unheated greenhouse. (If the temperature drops too low, then I can throw a heater in for the night.) I used to start selling plants in May, but last year I had people show up with cash in hand the first week of April. So I plan to be prepared this year. I plan to greatly increase the amount of plants that I plant this year. I also picked up a small egg hatcher and plan to hatch a bunch of chicks to keep and to sell. It's a lot of work, but one way or another I have to be able to survive what's coming. I urge everyone else to do the same. :36_3_12: |
